Den Gyldene Freden

We have been a part of the everyday life and celebrations of the people of Stockholm since 1722. Here, people have come together for generations, and each generation has its own “Freden”. Every generation knows how it truly should be at Freden. Every generation knows how it was at its best. Memory is a peculiar thing. It weaves its own tapestry, and “Freden” is a part of many such tapestries, stretching across time and space.

Our History

The facade of Den Gyldene Freden has witnessed revolutions in France and Russia, nine symphonies by Beethoven, the invention of the telephone, two world wars, Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species,” Star Wars, and much more. Inside these walls, a completely different history has been written, not entirely separate from the outside world but still its own.

1485
The wine merchant Simon Fränsell leases the plot on which Den Gyldene Freden stands today to open a wine tavern. Here, he serves bastert, malmesie, pöyto, and other wines of the time, along with German beers such as emist, hamborger, and prydzsing.
1719
The wine server Petter Hellberg purchases the rundown stone houses on the corner of Österlånggatan and Solgränd for 6600 copper coins and a gilded chalice.
1722
According to tradition, this is the year when Den Gyldene Freden was opened. However, scholars dispute this claim. They also debate which peace the name actually refers to. Is it the Peace of Stettin in 1570 or perhaps the Peace of Nystad in 1721? Or is it simply that both “gyldene” and “fred” are two pleasant words that become even more delightful when combined? Truth and fiction have had an effortless relationship at “Freden” ever since.
1738
Linnaeus moves to Stockholm and settles on Österlånggatan. He goes around the city’s taverns and offers to cure the guests’ ailments so that they can continue drinking. Perhaps he visits Freden. Perhaps not.
1760
Swedenborg drinks coffee and eats semlor at Freden – at least during the periods when coffee is not prohibited, which is often the case during those years.
1780
Freden is mentioned by Bellman in the newspaper “Hvad behagas” as one of the taverns that Movitz visits in search of remedies for fever, chills, hiccups, and catarrh.
1820
Stagnelius sits at Freden and composes poems about women he can never have.

Blissfully, the rubies of lips gently glowed, The bosom ignited with unearthly fire.
1891
Den Gyldene Freden closes, and the premises are rented out to widow Johanna Carolina Ericsson, who starts a temperance movement in the building. However, four years later, order is restored, and the tavern reopens.
1919
Anders Zorn, over a plate of meatballs, learns that “Freden” is to be closed for good. This is, of course, unthinkable. The solution is that he buys the tavern himself. Through his will, it is later guaranteed that the meatballs will remain on Den Gyldene Freden’s menu for all eternity.
1924
The New York Tribune writes:
“One enters the cellar of Freden, if one can find it. There, one passes through two or three dining rooms on the main floor and then descends a long stone staircase to another cellar. There, one finds Russians, Germans, Latvians, Finns, Estonians, and Swedes – fortune seekers, secret agents, foreign correspondents, poets, painters, musicians, and others belonging to the intellectual class that now wanders around Europe. They have come to Stockholm to eat, drink, and be merry.”
1925
On January 15th, breakfast is served at Den Gyldene Freden. The guests are those attending Astrid Bergman and Evert Taube’s wedding celebration, who have been partying all night and now need some food before heading home.
1930
Vilhelm Moberg and Nils Ferlin wrestles and arm wrestles inside the premises.
1932
Le Corbusier proposes that Gamla Stan (Old Town) should be leveled to the ground and a motorway should be built five meters above it. However, this proposal does not come to fruition.
1949
In the film “Sjösala,” Evert Taube spends his entire advance at Den Gyldene Freden.
1950
Evil, swift death is planned at Freden. The conspirators are named Stieg Trenter and Maj Sjöwall.
1971
Lena Nyman moves into an apartment above the restaurant.
1985
On New Year’s Eve, Cornelis Vreeswijk guests at Ulf Lundell’s New Year’s concert at Johanneshovs Isstadion. Meanwhile, the staff at Den Gyldene Freden leave everything they have at hand, extinguish the lights, and lock up. The restaurant becomes a stony Mary Celeste, visited only by rats and burglars. Four years and 30 million SEK later, it reopens, renovated and restored.
1992
On April 4th, the menu features “Roasted Veal Tenderloin with White Pepper Sauce flavored with Jasmine Tea and Raisins” for 195 SEK. For the less adventurous, there is also Wallenbergare for 136 SEK.
2019
When the lilacs are in bloom, the current owners take over the restaurant. Everything changes, yet everything remains the same.

Calendar

The Swedish nature changes with the seasons, and so do the people. Each season has its set table. Nettles and asparagus lie side by side, just like apple and goose. The crayfish have their own place, but herring can be found everywhere. At Den Gyldene Freden, we celebrate Swedish culinary traditions and make them accessible to everyone.
